8th Grade Lessons

Here is the writing work I have done with the 8th Graders.

The Importance of Annotation

There's no real "lesson" here...

90% of this "lesson" is solely just using this graphic novel. There are no words, so it naturally becomes accessible to all students and available to adding words. The other 10% is just questioning: the basis of good teaching.

So, be aware of this book, and I have never struggled with getting students to write from and engage with this text.

What follows are pages of examples of using this with one student one-on-one--a student who struggles with writing.

Annotation Guide – How do I personalize the story as a reader?

Characters – Who’s Who?

Setting – And Where Are They?

Important Ideas – What do YOU think matters?

Questions – What’s confusing you? (Words, ideas, passages…)

Opinions and Reactions – How do you FEEL about what’s happening? (#emojis)

* Don’t forget to make notes in the margins. It’s okay to write in the book. *
